This has been something on my ‘to-do-list’ for quite some time. In the past I’ve enjoyed writing, whether it be blog posts, letters or design research, so it's time to tap back into something I love.
‘Notes of a Songbird’ will reflect the slower human-scale of our business while providing readers a better insight into what we do. It is important to us that people know and care about the possibility that something beautiful and good can still emerge, evolve and exist in the world today.
These notes will make your heart sing, just like our Songbirds.
This will be a space where I share, in words, film and pictures, the unique value of Songbird, and how we engage with and design new methods to help preserve and sustain artisan praxis whilst creating our very own unique ranges.
I will introduce you to our team of artisans who we have nurtured and trained, and in whose hands each Songbird is crafted. I will explore concepts of forgiveness, imperfection, and empowerment through craft, and how we intentionally elevate craft through our design process.
I will give you a tour of our new (almost finished) studio and workshop, and how it has been designed to consider the flow of craft, growth, change and the capacity to go off-grid - allowing us greater resilience against not just the changing seasons but also the extremes of climate change.
I will walk you through our sourcing process and the traceability of all elements used to produce and package our products. In the past six years the procurement of materials has become increasingly challenging as we have seen a shift away from village and local based suppliers to online sourcing platforms which limit transparency and impact the quality and consistency of materials. I will show you how despite this, we are making intentional efforts to support local suppliers of all our raw materials and packaging requirements.
I hope that through ‘Notes of a Songbird’ our readers and customers will start to recognise the commonality found in diverse contexts and across great divides. In these contexts, just as within any craft process, imperfections and variations are expected, tolerance and forgiveness is accepted, and diversity is embraced.
Thank you for your curiosity and interest in what we do at Songbird - I hope you enjoy the journey.
