To begin with, the clay is portioned and weighed to ensure a consistent size for each Songbird. Once the clay dries and is fired it will become about 10-20% smaller than its wet-clay version!
The shaping of the bird is done by hand with a fine bamboo skewer as a tool. This is used to create the whistle and mouthpiece as well as any holes for threading earring hoops or necklace cords. Even the smallest of of our bird necklaces, such as the Superb Fairy Wren, has a little whistle on its tail - demonstrating incredibly fine skill and detail!
